Interview with Mr. Sanjay Aiyer, Managing Director at Blue Bird Logistics

Twig Logistics Network believes that hear what the members have to say is one of the most important tasks of being a logistics network. As a group, we must always be open to what our members have to suggest, and more important than that, lead us to our next actions. It must be our members that decide what new products we must create, where should be our next conference, which partnerships to develop, etc.

For that reason, we make a monthly interview with our members to hear what they have to say about their own company, the logistics market, freight forwarders in general, and about Twig Logistics Network. This month we chose a member from India – Blue Bird.

The company Managing director, Mr. Sanjay Aiyer answered a few questions we prepared for them. Do you want to know more of what does Blue Bird has to say about the company and market? Check out the interview below:

1. We would like to know more about Blue Bird history in the logistics market. Can you tell us a little bit more about the company history and experience in the market?

Blue Bird Logistics was established in 2005 . It was created by Industry professionals and mentored by veterans . The collective experience of the board has always remained over 50 solid years !

Blue Bird Logistics was started with the intention of providing world-class solutions to the market & committed to using best industry practices from across the globe in making a formidable force in the transportation business.  Our focus on employee welfare and training has ensured we have retained the best talent and by ensuring employee satisfaction, client satisfaction is automatically guaranteed.

We have built a great market reputation and generated substantial market value. From humble beginnings in Air Freight, Blue Bird Logistics now provides end to end solutions in Ocean, Air, Break Bulk & Air Charters.

2. Which are the main changes in the logistics market that you noticed since you started until now? And how does Blue Bird reacted considering all those changes?

The industry has metamorphosed drastically over the past 10 years. A lot for the better . Transparency & visibility has improved. Competition has increased, making us stay on our toes all the time. Customers have become more demanding and rightly so, contract sizes have become bigger – Everyone wants the big-ticket business, technology has made rapid strides, banking processes have made the movement of cash faster, the world is but a touch away!

Blue Bird has always worked in close concert with market forces. Our association with our principals – Liners, Port Operators, CFS & ICD owners & Rail Operators have blossomed and is a matter of great pride. Transit times are getting shorter.  Technology is cutting out crucial lead times, Product life cycles are getting shorter and as they do, newer products assume their place in the logistics business, so we need to keep refining our processes much more regularly than ever before. That keeps the mind active. This is also the most refreshing part of our business today.

3. We know that Blue Bird invests heavily in its employees, assisting in their professional and personal growth. In your opinion, how this position contributes to the success of the company?

I strongly believe that our people are the ones who take the company further. At Blue Bird Logistics, we have a wonderful mix of cultures and ethnicities. We are an equal opportunity employer and our people are clearly the reason for our success. The company has a liberal profit sharing scheme which ensures that there is even wealth distribution. That leads us all to jointly believe in working as a team and pushing our limits and the proverbial envelope to take the company further.

Regular training is imparted to our team to ensure they are kept abreast of changing market conditions and in tune with the technological advances that we believe will lead the way forward.

We also invest heavily in software to improve and reduce input workload, eliminate duplication but simultaneously improve & increase output and productivity. We have an equation for this and is also subject to continuous improvement and refinement. That’s also our Tagline – Obsessed with perfection!

4. Blue Bird has a big concern for the environment. How does the company to work to reduce the environmental impact?

Blue Bird Logistics is among the few SME’s in India that is a vociferous supporter of the United Nations Global Compact. While this formal engagement continues on 10 basic principles, we, at the same time are the extremely pro-environment and are committed to leave a low carbon footprint and hand over a planet better than the one we have inherited. Our focus of using transportation that helps reduce CO2 emissions , our close association with New and Renewable Energy organizations on a Regional and Global scale , educating the customers on getting using environment friendly modes of transportation & trying to bridge the gap to bring green transportation economics to market levels …… we leave no stone unturned to achieve our goals .

5. Which markets Blue Bird operates more frequently, and which ones are you working to increase the market participation?

Intra Asia, USA & Canada, South America & Africa. These have been traditionally strong markets for us since our very inception. We are forever looking to expand our footprints in these markets as we believe these to be the main trade lanes going forward.

Markets we are keen to establish ourselves, include Russia, Iran, Australia & New Zealand. These markets have stayed outside of our preview – for no real attributable/comprehensible reason and we hope to break that jinx in the future.

6.What differentials Blue Bird identified in Twig Logistics Network, and what does the company expects of the network and its members?

For one, Twig is the first network that has its base in South America – Our favorite market. More importantly, I enjoy the energy of Guilherme and his young team and his dedication to bringing a world-class network to the fore. I do believe that the management team of Twig has the technical know-how and market intel to achieve their goals.

The Network also has young and hungry for growth members and that’s what will drive the numbers between us. Building upon the meetings we hold one a year is an individual responsibility of each member. Twig should be able to use its growing global presence and market basic services to the large customers. That way, a lot more can be achieved.
